The Lhasa Apso originates from Tibet, a country of contrasts in temperature, hence the profuse, dense coat which keeps the dog warm in the cold and snow and insulates him against the heat. The eyefall of hair protects his eyes from the glare of the sun on the snow and from the dust. The thick hair between his toes protect his feet.
He has a keen sense of hearing, and his function in the Tibetan monasteries was to act as watchdog, alerting the larger Tibetan Mastiff dogs of any danger.
The Lhasa is a small, rugged, happy dog with a big character. They thrive on affection .
The coat requires regular grooming to prevent matts from forming.
